The World Affairs Council of Greater Houston, Houston Community College, and the United Nations Association – Houston Chapter are excited to announce the first Global Houston Model UN Conference on March 23, 2024 at the West Houston Institute! Represent countries from around the world and solve the world’s most pressing global issues! Sharpen your negotiation and communication skills by creating coalitions, debating solutions, negotiating terms, and drafting resolutions to tackle worldwide issues and conflicts. Show Colleges and Universities your passion as a global citizen while connecting with like- minded peers and global change makers

UN Security Council (UNSC)

The Security Council (UNSC) has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, taking the lead in determining the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression. Its 15 members call upon the parties in a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of settlement, sometimes imposing sanctions or authorizing the use of force to maintain international peace and security.
At GHMUN 2024, this committee will focus on Nuclear Disarmament

UN Environment Programme

For over 50 years, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has worked with government, civil society, the private sector, and UN entities to address humanity’s most pressing environmental challenges – from restoring the ozone layer to protecting the world’s seas and promoting a green, inclusive economy.
At GHMUN 2024, this committee will focus on Adherence to the Paris Climate Accords

UN Human Rights Council

The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is an intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and making recommendation on them. It was created by the UN General Assembly in 2006 to discuss all thematic human rights issues and situations that require its attention.
At GHMUN 2024, this committee will focus on Improving Human Rights in Rogue States

UN Refugee Agency

The UN Refugee Agency, or Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), was established by the UN General Assembly in 1950. Today, it works in 137 countries to lead international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people by providing life-saving assistance, food, water, and medical care for people forced to flee conflict and persecution.
At GHMUN 2024, this committee will focus on the Venezuelan Refugee Crisis.

UN Commission on the Status of Women

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. A functional commission of the Economic and social Council (ECOSOC), it was established by ECOSOC resolution 11 in June of 1946.
At GHMUN 2024, this committee will focus on Femicide.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

A: Model UN can be intimidating, especially when you’re first
getting started. Start by finding a sponsor or educator at your
school who can help you prepare for the conference and be there
on conference day. GHMUN will provide you with materials and
workshops to ensure you are prepared for conference day. Our
goal is to create an environment where delegates of all
experience levels can succeed and have fun.

A: The WAC Houston Education team will reach out to you with information about what students will need next steps, preparation materials, and opportunities for workshops.

A: To enable as many schools and students to participate as possible, the cost of registration is only $10 per student. Preparation materials for the conference will be provided to students and educators free of charge. On conference day, lunch will be provided for the students.

All positioning papers have to be sent to globalhoustonmun@wachouston.org by March 18th.
